Organizational Relationship

Directly Responsible to the Transportation Coordinator and/or his/her designee.

 

Statement of Duties:

  • The Crossing Guard plays a critical role in the safety and security of child pedestrians. The Crossing Guard must be at the assigned location on time 30 minutes prior to the beginning of school sessions and remain at the assigned location 15 minutes after the start of school. The p.m. assigned location shall be manned 15 minutes prior to the school dismissal time and 30 minutes after the dismissal of school.
  • If unable to report for duty due to illness or other personal reasons, a crossing guard shall notify the transportation office no later than 6:30 a.m. In cases of prolonged absences from duty, notify transportation as soon as possible.
  • Park your vehicle in a safe and legal place where it will not obstruct your vision of traffic.
  • Never leave the post during hours of duty.
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco products while on duty.
  • Cell phone usage or texting is prohibited except in the event of an emergency.
  • Crossing Guards should model appropriate street skills and behavior for child pedestrians.
  • To provide the safe movement of children to and from school when crossing public streets.
  • Stop all traffic from the middle of the crosswalk before allowing any students to cross.
  • The Crossing Guard must use the stop sign and wear the reflective vest so to be seen from each traveling lane –
  • Inform students not to cross the street until you have stopped all traffic.
  • Remain in the crosswalk until all students have safely passed.
  • Report unsafe behavior of children to the principal of the building on the day of the incident.
  • Stopping of motor vehicles that commit violations and the confrontation of motorists are prohibited. Report all vehicles (plate numbers) that refuse to stop or abide by your directions to the transportation department. Attempt to gather as much information, make, model, color of the vehicle.
  • Crossing Guard must have available at all times a copy of school calendar, name and phone numbers of transportation office.
  • Report all safety hazards that exist at or around the crossing location.
  • Performs all duties as indicated by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designees and the policies of the Haverhill School Committee.

Qualifications:

  • Must be physically fit and capable of performing all duties.
  • Must be honest, sincere, and scrupulous in his/her relationship with students, parents and guardian, community members and school personnel in accomplishing his/her work.
  • Ability to communicate with young people, including the ability to be able to set limits without being antagonistic or abrasive.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
